SCEPTRE EXHAUST SYSTEM
Please read all instructions completely before attempting to install. If you feel you are not capable of the installation, we recommend you contact your local dealer or mechanic.
Thank you for purchasing the Sceptre exhaust system. We are certain you’ll be thrilled with the sound and performance enhancements. The quality is unmatched and you will certainly get more compliments with the addition of this system. Please remember that the Sceptre exhaust system is not street legal and is sold for race use only. You are solely responsible as the end user . The entire unit is stainless steel and requires minimal maintenance. A periodic buffing with some good quality metal cleaner is all that’s required! To get the best performance, we recommend you remove the entire air pump assembly (fig. 11) or you will get a lot of popping on deceleration.
If you plan to re-jet on the bike, proceed to 1.1, then 1.2 only.
For the recommended complete installation, proceed to 1.4, 1.3, 1.1, 1.5, 1.2
1.1 JET INSTALLATION
You can install the jets on the bike if you do not wish to take the carbs off. (although we advise removing the idle mixture screws which requires carb removal). You will need a short 90 degree philips driver to remove the screws and a short 90 degree flat blade screwdriver to remove the main jets. Drain the float bowls as mentioned in 1.4. Remove the four float bowl screws on each carb (fig. 7). Remove the float bowls (fig. 8). Remove the main jet Hold the jet body with an 8mm wrench to avoid loosening this as well. Install the new main jets and tighten (fig. 9). Remove the pilot jets with a suitable small flat blade screwdriver (fig. 10). Install the new pilot jets and tighten. Reinstall everything in the reverse order as described above in the same positions they were before.
1.2 PIPE INSTALLATION
Start by removing the two bolts holding the rear foot peg hangers on. Remove the hangers and foot pegs as one unit. Loosen the clamp holding the muffler to the head pipe. Rotate the pipe and bracket away from the bike and out of the rear frame bracket and rubbers, then pull the muffler off the head pipe. Retain all original hardware. It will be reused on the Sceptre system. Install the Sceptre system in reverse of the procedure described above. In order to prevent exhaust leaks, use hi temp black silicone on the inside of the pipe prior to slipping on to the header.
1.3 IDLE MIXTURE SCREW PLUG REMOVAL
For the best performance and adjustability, we recommend you remove the carbs completely and take out the idle mixture screw plugs so you can have idle mixture adjustment. To do this, you must drill the aluminum plugs. (these are the plugs on the bottom of the carb with a small hole in the center) Be certain not to get any of the drill shavings into the carbs! Use an 1/8" drill bit and drill slowly until you are through the plug. Do not run the drill bit into the screw underneath or you can cause the screw to severely bottom out in the seat and cause permanent damage. Once you have the 1/8" holes drilled, take a suitable sheet metal screw and thread it into the hole enough to soundly grab the plug. Pull the plug and screw out using a pliers or vise grip. Underneath you will see the idle mixture screws. Lightly turn these all the way until they bottom, then back them out 1.75 turns as a start point.
1.4 CARB REMOVAL
Remove both seats. To remove the carbs you must loosen the airbox and pull it toward the rear of the bike. There are two allen head screws located under the fender that need to be taken out (fig. 1). Remove these first. Remove the right side cover by gently pulling it straight out of the rubber grommets. Underneath, pull the solenoid off the stands. Pull the link with the white and red wires down and out of airbox (fig. 2). Be careful when you get ready to pull airbox back that you do not break the rear solenoid stand. Disconnect the throttle position sensor at the plug by the frame. (you will have to cut a zip tie and reinstall one when you are finished)
On the left side of the bike, remove the battery completely (fig. 3). Turn the fuel off and remove the hose from the petcock (fig. 4). Loosen the clamps holding the carbs (fig. 5). Pull the wires off the bottom of the carbs. Under the main seat, remove the top plastic cover and air box rubber (fig. 6). Pull the hose off the top of the airbox.
Now grab the airbox and pull off the carbs toward the rear of the bike until you have enough clearance to get the carbs pulled back as well. Pull the carbs out of the rubbers. Slide the carbs out on the left side of the bike along with the vent line. When you get the carbs half way out, remove both throttle cables, making sure you mark the two so you can put them back in the same position. (this can be somewhat frustrating so be patient!) When you have the cables off, remove the carbs from the bike and drain the float bowls into a suitable container by loosening the drain screw at the bottom of the float bowl.
1.5 AIR PUMP REMOVAL
Remove both seats. Remove the fuel tank. Remove the two M6 bolts holding the air pump to the frame on the right side of the bike. Loosen the quick band clamps on the rubber hose that connects to the black elbow tubes that lead to the chrome straight tubes going into head so you can remove the hose. Disconnect the vacuum line on the # 1 intake manifold. Once everything is loose, remove the entire assembly, leaving the two black elbows and chrome tubes going into the head. Now you will need to remove the elbow and straight tube leading into the head (fig. 12). If you do not plan on reinstalling the air pump system, the easiest way to do this is to use a vise grip pliers and crimp the point where the chrome meets the black tube enough to turn the entire assembly loose (fig. 13). Once you have it loose, you can remove it by hand. Then you will have to plug the holes with suitable plugs, cap the vacuum port and plug the airbox hole. You can purchase a kit that includes all of these from Team Triumph using part number TTBAPK.
