Apparently there is some missing information in the Tacho installation
instructions for the Bonneville America, part number A9938043.
This page should help.
The use of the new console harness supplied in the kit is solely dependant on
whether your existing harness has two or three spare connectors as stated in the
instructions and is not year specific.
The following only applies to bikes that have TWO spare connectors coming from the tank console harness, thus requiring the use of the new tank console harness that has three spare connectors and the single wire harness supplied in the kit. Follow the instructions given. The other end of the single wire harness supplied connects to the main harness female side in the open space as shown below (this is the plug that connects to the console main harness). You have to open the back side of this first by gently prying the door open as shown, note the two tabs that hold this door, one on each side. Then insert wire/connector in the same orientation until it "clicks" into place. The other end that connects to the ignitor needs to be fully inserted until the black rubber gasket is inside of the hole. Remove the connector from the ignitor first.
